Letter signed by Governor Meldrim Thomson, mailed by Viguerie during 1978 cycle on behalf of Roger Jepsen

Dear Friend:
You and I have the best opportunity this year to defeat a Senator who voted to give away the Panama Canal. I'm referring to the campaign in Iowa against Senator Dick Clark.

A good conservative friend of mine, former Lt. Governor Roger Jepsen, is running against Dick Clark. And there's no doubt in my mind Roger Jepsen can win provided good conservatives like you and me will help him.

Roger has the advantage of running against Dick Clark's ultra-liberal voting record. Clark's liberal record includes votes to:

  • use taxpayer money to finance Federal elections.
  • Federally subsidize abortions.
  • delay construction of the B-1 bomber and make major slashes in the defense budget.
  • give food stamps to strikers, repeal Right to Work laws, repeal the Hatch Act, permit Common Situs picketing, and other power grabs.
  • continue Federal court-ordered busing of our school children.

And Dick Clark voted to give away taxpayers' money to Marxist dictator Omar Torrijos to take away our Panama Canal.

One of the reasons why Roger Jepsen can win is because the campaign to beat ultra-liberal Dick Clark is in the rural and conservative state of Iowa. Roger Jepsen can win because he is a dynamic conservative candidate. He's a former state senator who knows how to win elections. He was elected Lt. Governor of Iowa twice. In 1970 he was reelected with the highest plurality of any Republican in Iowa's history.

The best way for Roger to win is to expose Dick Clark's ultra-liberal voting record. Too many people in Iowa think Clark is a conservative because he talks conservative in Iowa. The trouble is his liberal votes in Washington aren't publicized back home.

Clark is one of the most liberal Senators in Congress. Every major lobby group - whether it's liberal or conservative - agrees that Dick Clark is about as liberal as you can get. Just look at the brochure I've enclosed for you.

Big Labor will be pouring thousands of campaign dollars into Iowa for Dick Clark. They want Clark to be reelected because he votes with Big Labor 90 percent of the time. But most of their money will probably be spent on expensive radio and television advertising.

To expose Clark's ultra-liberal voting record Roger Jepsen will use a different method: letters to voters.

Certainly he will have to use some of the very, very expensive radio, television and newspaper advertising. But primarily he will conduct his low-budget people-to-people campaign with letters sent directly to voters in their homes.

By writing letters, better than 95 percent of each dollar will be used to peronally explain to voters exactly why they should vote against Dick Clark and for Roger Jepsen.

You see, conservatives have proven over and over again they can win elections by writing to voters and convincing them that their opponents vote for big government, big bureaucracy and big spending.

But it takes money to buy stamps, envelopes and stationery. To reach 650,000 voters with personal letters will cost $90,500 for stamps alone.

Roger called me last week and said he must raise $134,975 by May 24th to keep his voter letter campaign on schedule.

So I hope you'll do me a personal favor by sending the largest check you can personally afford - whether it's $500, $100, $50, $25, or even $15 - to help my friend, Roger Jepsen.

Think of it this way: with a contribution of $13 you can help Roger buy stamps to reach 100 voters. $39 will help reach 300 voters. $130 will help reach 1000 voters.

The important thing is this: Roger Jepsen needs to know where he stands financially as soon as possible. If he has to cut back on his campaign he has to know that now. So if you can help, please fill out the "Yes" card and send it to him today, along with your contribution.

However, even if you can't help now for whatever reason, please send the "No" card to Roger so he can plan his campaign schedule with this in mind.

Remember, this is our best chance to defeat an ultra-liberal who voted to give away our Panama Canal. But in order for Roger Jepsen to win he needs help from conservatives like you.

I told Roger I'll do everything I can to help him win. I hope you will too.

Sincerely,
Meldrim Thomson, Jr.
Governor of New Hampshire

PS. Please note that the big well-heeled special interest groups are hoping you'll ignore my letter to you so Dick Clark can breeze into reelection. Please don't. Please help Roger Jepsen defeat ultra-liberal Senator Dick Clark by sending your contribution today.
